The Weekly Collection #6

The Weekly Collection #6

What's the talk of the town? What will happen in restaurants, bars, theatre & music scenes that you want to be there?

The glasses rise until they meet each other. Happy New Year! A phrase so classic these days and so crucial at the same time. Full-year!

Retraining. New ideas. New arrivals. New thoughts. All are the latest as they should be in the new year. 2023 has arrived, bringing a series of reasons to get out. To have fun. To be filled with new memories. To create.

In a city that is constantly renewing itself. In Athens, that has something new to offer every day. Fun, practical and -mainly- on a mental level, in 2023, becomes more necessary than ever. That's why this year, we will introduce you to - remind you of all those places that deserve one or more of your visits.

Most epik sweets have their place in Mavili Square

Where: Doryleou 2, Mavili Square

When: Every day from 11.00 - 00.00

Social; Facebook | Instagram

Why: As we said last year (I waited a long time to write this finally) Mavili square is generally a hangout that we love very much. Each for their own reasons. The arrival of Epik's gelaterias came to add just to that list. And to bring the tradition as closely as possible to our taste. The kaimaki ice cream, like the rest of the flavours, is daily production and with sweet combinations that are as epic as they need to be to honor their name.

What should I get; An awesome choice is the Armenovia which has semifreddo cream, caramelized almonds, meringue and almond ninoise and another is the epik (random?) with pistachio biscuit, cream ice cream, pistachio and whipped cream. In other news, at epik you can find from loukoumia of a favorite Greek island to pastelia, almonds and everything else traditional that your gluttonous but picky stomach can ask for.

The coolest '80s place to drink has a name: Apoteka

Where: 31 Derigny, Victoria

When: Every day from 10.00 - 01.30

Social; Facebook Instagram

Why: Because it's nice to find places that are created so that you can "travel" to another era. To drink your drink on a colourful couch from the 80s, to enjoy your coffee in a place that doesn't remind you of your previous haunts. Speaking of hangouts, it would be good to mention here that Patision and the entire area around it are rising with different proposals to win a place in our streets-hangouts. I will make it; With stores like Apoteka, the odds are on her side. However, it is still too early to judge. For now, we can hang out on Derigny, meet friends, meet dates, and have a good time at the well-arrived Apoteka in the area.

Extra info: Since Apoteka means pharmacy in Italian, you could easily give the saying "I fly to the pharmacy" another dimension. Just try it.

The feelgood show that's back, and we're pleased about it: Bill and Lou

Where: At the Θέατρο του Νέου Κόσμου

When: Monday and Tuesday at 21.00

Why: There are some shows that you leave with a massive smile. And as you walk, you applaud within yourself what you see. They are the interpretations of Vassilis Mavrogeorgiou, Lydia Tzanoudakis and Stelios Iakovides. It is the sweet direction of Dimitris Agiopetrits Bogdanos. It is also the true story of love and friendship that they come to present before you. It's the laughs that will surprise you. It's the crying. It's all. A show for every age, every thought, and every mind that returns after repeated sold-outs to meet again those who loved it and those who adored it.

Where can I book? ΜΠΙΛ & ΛΟΥ | Εισιτήρια online! | Viva.gr

The concert we were waiting for: José González at the SNFCC

Where: In the Stavros Niarchos Hall ΚΠΙΣΝ

When: Monday 23/01 at 20.30

Why: Why "This is How We Walk on the Moon" and why the Swedish wizard of the indie folk scene is coming for a one-and-only performance as part of the Cosmos concert series of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, so it's a shame to miss him. If you don't already know him, you might love him by Googling his outstanding performance at the 2020 Nobel Prize ceremony with 'El Inventor. If you already know him, surely, as we speak, you've got 'Teardrop' playing, and you've already booked tickets.

How do I book? Online at www.ticketservices.gr, by phone at 210 7234567 and at the Ticket Services office (39 Panepistimiou, Athens)

The art exhibition to start the year artistically: "Coming back. Cycladic treasures on the return journey."

Where: At Μουσείο Κυκλαδικής Τέχνης

When: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday: 10.00-17.00, Thursday: 10.00-20.00, Sunday: 11.00-17.00

Until when: 31/10/23

Social; Instagram | Facebook

Why: This is the first step in implementing the historic agreement between the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Museum of Cycladic Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York (MET) ratified by the Greek Parliament on September 9, 2022.

It is about the gradual return to Greece of the collection of 161 proto-Cycladic antiquities of the unique archaeological value of the American collector Leonard Stern. Fifteen of these antiquities are presented for the first time worldwide in Athens.

Rare exhibits that will create new data in our knowledge of Proto-Cycladic art. Among them are ten marble figurines and five vases made of marble, steatite and clay, covering a broad chronological range from the Late Neolithic to those of the Proto-Cycladic II period (c. 5300 – 2400/2300 BC). The figurines exclusively represent the female figure, belonging to types and variations that correspond to the stylistic rhythms of each period (schematic, pre-regular, regular). In contrast, the vases represent some of the most typical vessel types of the entire Proto-Cycladic Period.

Where to book: You can get your ticket at the museum box office (Regular ticket: €12 and reduced €6 - free entry for Friends of the Museum of Cycladic Art)

The movie we want to see: "The Gold of the Rhine" by Fatih Akin

In movie theatres

When: All week

Why: The excellent Fatih Akin, having in his magical history films such as "Never Together" (in which he has even collaborated with Giannis Economidis in a rare appearance of the Greek director in the role of an actor) and "Soul Kitchen" returns to cinemas with an explosive combination of one of the most famous German myths and the true story of the renowned rapper Hattar who organized one of Germany's biggest heists. A film that cinephiles began watching at the beginning of 2023.

Until next time: This year doesn't matter if it will be your year, as long as you have plenty of good reasons to remember it.

Happy New Year!
