The Weekly Collection #14

The Weekly Collection #14

What's happening in town? What will happen in restaurants, bars, theatre & music scenes that you want to be there?

Mudda. Grey lines. Votes. May is coming to an end. It's time to close the vast cycle that may promise to have lasted just 31 days, yet we all know that's a relative lie: hard days, hard times (both literally and figuratively), hard everything. Walking through the city, the faces are sullen and stressed. At the same time, parties, joy, concerts, shows, menus and cocktails try to create a good counterbalance. Some days, they make it. These days we are here today to put on our agenda. Let's prepare for what's to come, which we hope will be happy and light. Next month, it means summer, and our mood rises with mercury. And the dance begins because he can't do otherwise.

NiDo Athens: A gastrobar with awesome cocktails and music in the city centre

Where: Leventi 5, Kolonaki

When: Tuesday-Saturday 18.00-01.00

Social; Instagram

Why: It is the creation of chef Nikos Thomas (Nikos Thomas. Chef & Master Chef — Backyard Opera Athens), who turns everything he catches into delicious gold. In a space that resembles a bar and breaks your nose every time a dish from its open kitchen is ready, NiDo Athens was created for those who want to eat after music. Good music. Loud music. The feature of the place is that from opening to closing, it will play loud and good music. And since the mood is such, let's start with the drinks this time: Cocktail lovers will have a fantastic time with the "teased" list of classic cocktails. The strawberry negroni, for example, is pink summer magic. Less well-known, crystal peach is there to drink by the glass (literally). Wine lovers will find their way to NiDo as its list is extremely well-travelled and well-informed.

Since he is always hungry, the kitchen's suggestions must be said to be quite different from the usual ones. Influenced by Europe and Japan, the chef creates small dishes with huge flavours.

What should I eat; Unmissable is the cauliflower straw with wasabi combo vinaigrette and the mussel straw with snail, tarragon and garlic. Yes, those last four ingredients go in the same stick. And the experience is unique. Bread and butter should land on your table. So are oysters, whichever style you prefer. Beef tartare is also a strong choice.

As mentioned above, the dishes are small so that you can try them all. So keep going if you want more stuff than you usually order. Worth.

The exhibition that opens and awaits us: "Behold Rhodes"

Where: At Space 52 (Larnakos 28)

When: May 27 - June 24

Why: It is a new digital environment for hosting and promoting contemporary art, which wants to bring the public together with today's artistic vision. In addition, this activity encourages creative work in Greece and abroad, making art accessible to everyone.

The first exhibition of I.C.A.R.O. C.A.G.A. in the polymorphic space of the visual artist Dionysis Christofilogiannis, space52, in a cor ad cor collaboration on the occasion of ceramic creations, he managed to gather 14 distinguished contemporary artists (Leoni Giagdzoglou, Stella Capezanou, Apostolos Karakatsanis, Konstantinos Ladianos, Kyriaki Mavroyorgi, Natalia Manda, Maro Michalakakou, Dimitris Neveskiotis, Maria Oikonomidou, Maria Oikonomopoulou, Giorgos Tserionis, Dimitris Fragakis, Ioanna Hatzipanigyri, Dionysis Christofilogiannis) who were invited to be inspired by the ceramics of the famous Ikaros pottery in Rhodes and, studying the designs from the original, to use them in their new creations. It is a contemporary set of ceramics, installations and sculptures, a reflection on the concept of traditional but also provocative writing in the continuation of the tradition of Icarus.

Apostolis Artinos, who curates the exhibition, explains that the artists are invited to take on this recall experience within the aesthetic environment of their time. To recall the memory of the thing and confront its allure in their work.

Where do I book a ticket? The exhibition is free.

The metal concert we want to go to: Nightwish at Release Athens

Where: Water Square

When: June 7

Why: 25 years now, Nightwish have managed to identify with symphonic metal sounds and become particularly loved in Greece. Floor Jansen with her incredible voice, and Tuomas Holopainen, come in the first week of June to Water Square, and they are waiting for us to let loose together. And let's break it down ala Finnish at the most significant concert they've given to date in our country. Those who find themselves there, make sure to go early and listen to the Swedish titans of melodic death metal In Flames as well as the consistently excellent Insomnium.

The show we want to see: Living Room

Where: At Εναλλακτική Σκηνή ΚΠΙΣΝ

When: On June 7

Why: This unique performance combines drag with classical singing, set poetry and visual arts. The Alternative Stage of the National Opera participates for the first time in Athens Pride 2023 with the first presentation of the performance Living Room, a musical show created by the baritone and drag performer Georgios Iatrou and the visual artist and director Anthi Kougia.

Georgios Iatrou, creator of the drag persona Nina Nai together with Anthi Kougia, created a stage metaphor based on personal experience and wants to explain to us the concept of chameleons that we often adopt, burying our real identity to adapt to the environment. On the piano, the distinguished chief musician and pianist Giorgos Ziavras accompanies Nina Nai in the magical setting of the architect Jacques Luspa.

Where do I book? Entry to the public is free with tickets, which will be distributed from Monday, 29 May 2023 at 12.00 exclusively here: LIVING ROOM :: Υπηρεσία Εισιτηρίων - TicketServices.gr

The movie we want to catch up on: The Blue Caftan

In the cinemas of the city

When: All week

Why: It's been out for a while, but it's 100% worth seeking out and seeing. It is moving, has excellent performances and comes to talk about the story of freedom of expression and existence. The story of Mina and Halim is a complicated story that needs applause. And enough crying.

Till next time: Let's remember that for summer to come, we must first go towards it.
