The Weekly Collection #8

The Weekly Collection #8

What's happening in town? What will happen in restaurants, bars, theatre & music scenes that you want to be there?

Excursion! Or else the first holiday after the holidays have arrived with masks, parties and - probably - perfect weather to go out, dance, have fun, meet friends or travel to near or distant destinations. The colourful streamers have appeared in some places in the city while everyone is feverishly preparing for the parties that will leave an era. The outfits that will go viral. The trips will increase our optimism and oxygen levels.

We gathered for one more week here to talk about our options. The choices that will make us have a good time. To learn and share things. Let's eat and drink and dance - as the famous saying of the day dictates. Let's go then!

The Bistro where you enjoy the food like the episodes of The Unacceptable: Jerár

Where: Agia Varvaras 55, Dafni

When: Tuesday-Saturday 19.00-00.00 and Sunday 14.00-18.00

Social; Facebook | Instagram

Why: First of all, because it is a place that, as its chef (Haris Nikolouzos) recently told us, "You don't need to dress up or act a certain way to be there." In other words, something similar to what John describes to Dimitra will never happen to you:

Now that we have solved the behavioural part, let's see the culinary aspect, which is magic, especially if you like handmade cold meats and good wine. Of course, somewhere here, we must also talk about the kitchen of Haris Nikolouzou, who has now established himself in Athens and is among the rising chefs of his generation, and not without reason. His fantastic fried rabbit is already a standout dish from his special and all-you-can-eat menu, while the croque madame is 'your must-order.

In general, what do I order? Well, if you're a bit of a surf and turf fan, then please try the mackerel mi-cuit with roe, pickle broth, red cabbage and pickles and get a plate or two of the chef's handmade charcuterie at the table (the one with the fennel it is excellent but the one with the truffle is also not behind). Then, look at the list, which is sometimes different, and choose risotto and meat (all Greek production from selected farms). Of course, fish is always a good choice, mainly depending on your mood.

Extra tip: Don't forget to eat desert. Just don't.

Another thing: The wine list (based on Greek and French) is updated, and waiting for you to discover it.

3 Halloween parties we don't want to miss:

Carnival Techno at ItAthens

When: Saturday 25/2 at 23:55

Where to attend; Sat.25/2 Carnival Techno at It Athens(2 Stages) | Facebook

Why: Because ketelapongo has its limits but mainly because it's fantastic when they give you the opportunity to celebrate with the music you like.

Entrance; 8 euros with beer ...

Dress code: The theme is free to choose the mask or costume that suits you and makes it easier for you to dance, aka hit.

Carnival Disco Odyssey at six d.o.g.s

When: Sunday 26/02 at 22:30

Where to attend; CARNIVAL DISCO ODYSSEY by Νeedless x &Beyond at six d.o.g.s | Facebook

Why: We all know that a Halloween party and six d.o.g.s always go together. Because the theme is "our animal instincts and all forms of Disco music". And because on that day, sooner or later, all roads will lead to Avramiotou.

Entrance; 8 euros!

Dress code: All animals allowed (pandas will win special gifts).

Carnival parties at Gazarte

When: Saturday 25/02 & Sunday 26/02 at 22.30

Where to attend; Gazarte | Carnival Parties 2023 | Facebook

Why: Because of a theme like "Soap operas that stigmatized us", the whole phrase is unmissable. On Saturday, February 24, 48ORES combined with DJ sets will be waiting for us on stage, while on February 25, The Swingin' Cats with DJ sets will come out to make Halloween Sunday more festive than ever.

Where can I book a ticket: Gazarte Carnival Parties 2023 | Εισιτήρια online! | Viva.gr

Dress Code: SOAP OPERA GLAM - Oversized quilts, pieces with sequins, colourful prints and shiny accessories. Whole-body red swimsuits are also accepted for Baywatch fans!

The show we're happy about because it's starting: The Rise of Arturo Ui, directed by Ari Biniari

Where: At the ARK Theater, Drosopoulos 197 Kypseli

When: Wednesday-Sunday

Why: Aris Biniaris has proven that he doesn't do shows for the sake of doing them. Each of his choices hides a lot of music, a lot of tension, and a lot of comments. After last year's excellent "Animal Farm" at the National Theatre, he comes this year to talk about Fascism through the words of Bertolt Brecht, giving Giorgos Chrysostomou the role of the fascist Arturo Ui. A macabre farce that awaits our applause.

The exhibition you must see before it ends: «This Current between us»

Where: Historical Steam Power Station Facilities, 1 Neo Faliro Solomou, 185 47 Piraeus

Until when: 12/03/23 (Thursday-Sunday 16.00-20.00)

Why: First, because you will see up close the first steam-electric power plant in Greece, the Neo Faliro Steam-Electric Power Plant. In a setting reminiscent of Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris, where in 1995, Dimitris Papaioannou presented the extraordinary conception of "One Minute of Silence", 38 artists join forces, find their space between giant machines and important historical chambers and place their work. Part of the station's facilities is open to the public for the first time, while within the exhibition, you can discover extensive archival material from PPC's photographic and historical archive.

Extra tip: Visit the exhibition when the light has fallen to get a better picture and absorb all the magical scenery of building D (which you will see on the map they will give you upon entry).

Second tip: Walk out of the building onto the footbridge. There is still an exhibit to see, but mainly, there is a space left over from another era, much more industrial, accurate, and Berlin. Go from one end of the bridge to the other and enjoy the river that you might have thought we don't have in Athens.

Where can I book: No reservation is needed and entry is free.

The movie that will put you in the party and music mood: Babylon by Damien Chazelle

Where: Cinemas around the city

When: All week

Why: Because if there's one thing Damien Chazelle knows how to do well, it's creating the musical conditions for his story to have flow and power. In three hours that you don't understand that it has passed, the director, through the excellent performances of the (beautiful) Margot Robbie and the always fantastic Brad Pitt, comes to fit the evolution of cinema, its course and its possible outcome. Alongside this, fans of La la land can remember and feel the safety of its musical universe as the composer and director agree to touch chords that connect these two films uniquely and wonderfully. A lot of jazz, a lot of saxophones, a lot of dancing, and a delightful Hollywood movie.

Till, next time: Put on your mask, it's nice to celebrate with others.
