What's playing in theatres this summer?


The theatre continues unabated in the dynamic course that has started since the beginning of this season.

We will enjoy more than thirty performances at the Athens and Epidaurus Festival and at the festivals of the municipalities and the region of Attica.

The theatres will be open all summer and have performances for everyone. Aristophanic and Modern Greek comedies, ancient tragedy, contemporary repertoire, select international arrivals, successful winter repeats, and experimental performances.


The Dutch director Johan Simmons is the director who opens Epidauria with a radical reading of Euripides' Alcestis, where music is the dominant element. The play premiered at Epidaurus on 1/7.

"Antigone" by Sophocles is directed by Cesaris Grouzinis, wanting to emphasize the timelessness of the myth. The role of Antigone, the woman symbol of resistance to power, is played by Elli Tringou. Creon is Vassilis Bispikis, Leader of the Dance is Ierokles Michaelidis. The show premiered on 9/7 in Thebes, the birthplace of Antigone will be performed at the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus on 5 and 6/8 and will then tour.

Anti-war "Helen" from NTNG (12-13/8). The inventive Vassilis Papavasileiou created a highly spectacular show reminiscent of a variety show, magnifying the play's irony, according to which Helen the Fair never went to Troy. The elite distribution consists of Emily Koliandri, Agoritsa Oikonomou, Themis Panou et al.

Bost's satirical "Medea" is the National Theater's proposal for this year's comedy. Directed by Yannis Kalabrianos and starring: Stelios Iakovidis, Syrmo Keke, Galini Hatzipashali and others. As far as the tragedy is concerned, Argyris Xafis, who descends for the first time as a director in Epidaurus, stages the Sophoclean "Aiades". Starring Stathis Stamoulakatos, in his first performance in an ancient drama, Dimitris Imello, Evi Saulidou, Christos Stylianou and others. (29-30/7)

"Thermoforiazouses" meet at their secret feast to judge their slanderer, Euripides. Premiered at Petra Theater (30/6) and goes on in open theatres throughout the country. Directed by Yiannis Bezos, who holds one of the leading roles along with Vladimiros Kyriakides and Fotini Baxevanis.

Thanasis Papageorgiou celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Stoa with texts by the leading exponent of the famous theatre Bost. The performance "I Hear a Bell Toll" (English translation) is a compilation of scenes from Bost's plays. It will be directed by Thanasis Papageorgiou, who will also play with Leda Protopsalti, Eva Kaminari and others.

Tasos Nousias and Maria Protopappa will meet this summer theatrically in the tragedy "Filoktitis". Sophocles focuses on the human factor and presents the drama of Philoctetes. Directed by Marlene Kaminsky.

Dimitra Papadopoulou's new multi-faceted performance at Alsos, "What are we experiencing?" (English translation), is a revival of the good Greek revue with her texts. In the brand new production, the music has been composed by Mariza Rizou, directed and performed by Thodoris Atheridis and starring Krateros Katsoulis, Kostas Koklas, Panos Mouzourakis, Lefteris Eleftheriou, Parthena Horozidou, Eleni Kokkidou, Antonis Loudaros, Thanasis Alevras and others.

One of the most discussed German directors, Ulrich Rasche, is coming to our country for the first time, in Epidaurus, to present his version of Aeschylus' "Agamemnon".
